Moving to Sammamish with Kids: A School Year Survival Guide
Moving to Sammamish with Kids: A School Year Survival Guide
Moving is stressful. Moving with kids is a different level entirely.
I know because I have done it — and because I have helped hundreds of families navigate this exact transition on the Eastside. The families who handle it best are the ones who arrive informed. The ones who struggle are often the ones who focused entirely on the house and forgot to think about everything that surrounds it.
If you are moving to Sammamish with school-age children, this is the guide I wish I had.
Start the School Enrollment Process Earlier Than You Think
Sammamish is served by both the Issaquah School District and the Lake Washington School District. Which district you fall into depends on your specific address — and it matters. Each district has different elementary, middle, and high school assignments.
Before you finalize your home purchase, confirm which school your child will attend and whether it matches your priorities. The Issaquah School District website has a school finder tool. Use it early in your search, not after you have fallen in love with a house.
Enrollment in both districts typically opens in early spring for the following fall. If you are arriving mid-year, contact the district office directly — they have dedicated enrollment coordinators for families relocating from out of state.
Understand the Open Enrollment and Choice Programs
Both districts have open enrollment programs that allow families to request placement at a school outside their assigned boundary, subject to availability. If the elementary school in your zone is not your first choice, this is worth exploring. It is not guaranteed, but families who apply early often have good outcomes.
Connect With the School's Parent Community Before You Arrive
Almost every Sammamish elementary and middle school has an active PTA or parent organization with a Facebook group or email list. Find it. Join it before your first day. The parents in these groups are typically welcoming and incredibly helpful — they will tell you which after-school programs are worth signing up for, how pickup and dropoff logistics work, and which teacher requests families prefer.
This sounds minor. It is not. Your child's social integration is often faster and smoother when parents are connected.
The After-School Landscape: Know Your Options Early
Sammamish has a strong ecosystem of after-school activities — sports leagues through Eastside Youth Soccer, Sammamish Little League, gymnastics studios, music schools, coding programs, swim clubs, and more. The most popular programs fill quickly, often months in advance.
Research and register for activities as soon as you know your move date. Waiting until you arrive often means waitlists. The families who arrive connected are the ones who hit the ground running.
Give Your Child — and Yourself — a Transition Timeline
Here is something nobody tells you: it takes most children one full school year to truly settle into a new community. The first few months involve adjustment, sometimes social awkwardness, sometimes homesickness for old friends. This is normal, and it passes.
The best thing you can do as a parent is stay patient, stay positive, and stay active in the school community. Attend school events. Volunteer when you can. Let your child see you building connections, because they will follow your lead.
Sammamish is a genuinely welcoming community. The families here moved from somewhere too — many of them recently. That shared experience creates an openness to new connections that I have always found remarkable.
Plan Your First Weekend Before You Arrive
Have a family plan for your first weekend in Sammamish. Beaver Lake Park is a wonderful first outing — trails, a lake, and a park that will feel immediately special. Pine Lake Park has a swimming beach. The Sammamish Commons is a great gathering place. Starting your first weekend with something memorable anchors your family's sense of place in a way that unpacking boxes does not.
